BRADENTON, Florida — A Manatee County couple has been arrested for allegedly stealing packages from doorsteps in Lakewood Ranch, according to authorities. Joseph Burden, a 41-year-old, and Jessica McNew, a 42-year-old, were apprehended after detectives tracked them to a Bradenton residence.The arrests occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, when detectives found evidence linking the pair to multiple thefts around Manatee County. The couple, dubbed “porch pirates,” and their vehicle were captured on doorbell cameras at various locations, providing detectives with identifiable information. They were apprehended later in the day while wearing the same clothes as seen in the videos.In one instance, Burden and McNew were recorded backing a white Toyota Solara into a driveway, walking up to the front door, and taking packages before driving away. The vehicle’s license plate was captured on camera and confirmed to be the same one seen at several crime scenes.Detectives obtained a search warrant for a residence and a detached shed in the 1600 block of 51st Ave E., Bradenton. There, they discovered packages, personal property, and a large assortment of envelopes with Christmas cards and other mail, likely taken from mailboxes. They also found an array of personal identification information.Burden and McNew face multiple counts of grand theft from a residence. The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges expected, according to the authorities.
