Cooper grants clemency to two Charlotte area offenders

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Two inmates serving time for crimes around the Charlotte area have been granted clemency by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper this week.

One of those individuals highlights is 62-year-old Toney King, who served over 30 years for hotel armed robberies in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, and Rowan counties. A commission will decide whether or not to release him now that he is eligible for parole, the state said.

“Ensuring careful review of cases while taking executive clemency action is a responsibility I take seriously,” Governor Cooper said.

In addition to King, 55-year-old Sharon Redfearn received a pardon of forgiveness from the state after being convicted on drug trafficking charges in 1993 in Mecklenburg County.

Both have been actively involved in self-help programs while incarcerated.

“All of these individuals are deserving of clemency and we will continue to work to protect our communities and improve the fairness of our criminal justice system.”
