Oklahoma has carried out 15 executions since resuming them. Only Texas has more

Only Texas has carried out more executions since Oklahoma resumed lethal injections three years ago .

Oklahoma started doing executions again on Oct. 28, 2021 , after a hiatus of more than six years. So far, it has carried out 15, the latest on Dec. 19.

Texas carried out 18 in the same time period, according to a database at the Death Penalty Information Center. Four more are scheduled for next year.

Nine other states also have carried out executions in the same time period, according to the nonprofit organization’s database. Alabama is the only other one to hit double digits with 10.

Oklahoma would have completed 30 executions by the end of this year if the original resumption schedule had held. The state did not, mostly because the Oklahoma Department of Corrections was given more time between executions. The gap is now up to 90 days.

Also, one inmate, Julius Jones, had his death sentence commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Gov. Kevin Stitt announced his decision on clemency just four hours before the execution was set to start.
