SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — A Southaven church is going the extra mile at Christmas by giving away $1,000 a day this month.
So far, Brown Missionary Baptist Church has given away $24,000. We spoke with senior pastor Bartholomew Orr, who says giving back is what the holidays are all about.
Orr says Brown Baptist’s 31 Days of Christmas works by nominating a person in the community. A committee selects the recipient and, soon after, a surprise check comes their way.
One man he highlighted in Frederick Johnson, who now has to use a wheelchair after being struck by a stray bullet. The bullet is still inside his body.
Orr says while the checks may not cover everything, he hopes that by giving gifts to those in need, generosity will spread throughout the Memphis area.
