CANYON — Canyon Independent School District announced last week the reinstatement of the Bible in its school libraries after initially removing the religious text to comply with newly enacted state regulations. The decision follows a comprehensive review prompted by the passage of House Bill 900 and subsequent clarifications from state representatives.
In a statement released prior to getting feedback from Texas State Rep. Jared Patterson Wednesday, Canyon ISD addressed recent reports claiming the Bible had been removed from its schools. “Recent reports claiming Canyon ISD has removed the Bible from our schools don’t tell the whole story. The Bible has always been, and continues to be, available in our schools to support instructional resources and meet all TEKS requirements. This longstanding practice has not changed. Additionally, our libraries contain books about the Bible, including Bible stories, which remain available to our students,” the statement read.
A day later, the district released a statement that the Bible had been restored in its libraries.
