CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One person was medically evaluated after firefighters with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS responded to a house fire in the Brandermill area on Christmas Eve.
The fire was reported at 6:47 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and was located at a home in the 3400 block of Nuttree Woods Drive.
Firefighters arrived to find an attached garage on fire and were able to bring it under control within 10 minutes, according to authorities.
One person was medically evaluated for smoke inhalation but is expected to be okay.
Authorities said they believe the fire was caused by ashes from the fireplace being improperly discarded.
“Please remember to store hot ashes in a metal container and place them at least 10 feet away from any structure,” a social media post from the fire department reads. “Allow them to cool for at least 24 hours before disposing of them.”
