NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The holidays mean different things to different people, and for some, having a place to call home makes all the difference in the world.
“This is the best Christmas gift ever. Very much a second chance, and I’m not going to fail at this one,” Kisha Smith said.
Kisha Smith was emotional after walking through the doors of her newly gifted home. Smith spent some of her life on the streets after being pulled between high housing costs and a low income.

“I lost my job. I was down to one job, which was a waitress job that was not paying the bills, and my rent was $700, and my light bill was $500,” Smith said.
Newly divorced and now evicted, Smith spent many sleepless nights outside of Waffle House on Canal Street.
“I drank coffee all night so nobody would see me. I walked in when I thought I saw somebody I know so they could think like, I’m just going to the waffle house. I was embarrassed. I was embarrassed that people would see me and know that, you know, she’s on the streets now,” said Smith.
