Convictions upheld for man who stabbed, killed woman near Rockford

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who fatally stabbed a woman near Rockford and injured her two children has lost a bid to have his convictions overturned.

Jacob Ryan was sentenced to life without parole for the 2021 stabbing death of Ciara Paul. Paul’s two children, ages 2 and 5, were injured.

It happened at her home off of Myers Lake Avenue near Belding Road in Cannon Township.

Ryan was arrested at a Greyhound bus station in Toledo. He and the victim had been in a long-distance relationship, according to court records.

Ryan appealed his jury trial convictions , saying the evidence against him was insufficient.

The Michigan Court of Appeals disagreed.

In addition to a life sentence, Ryan got 37 to 60 years for the attacks on the two children. He is at a state prison in southeast Michigan.
