Duo behind Sweet Nate’s Coffee opens brick-and-mortar location

Owners Todd Matthews and John Jacob of Sweet Nate’s Coffee have been selling locally-made coffee and breakfast offerings out of a mobile trailer since October, 2021.

Just over three years later, the pair is doing just that and more, with the opening of a storefront location within the Oliver House, 27 Broadway St. The coffee house opened to the public on Dec. 4 and was formerly home to the Onyx Cafe. The shop is named after Matthews’ late father, who they called “Sweet Nate.”

“We wanted to have something more consistent that people could always come and get our experience,” Mr. Matthews said, adding that the coffee truck isn’t as functional in the winter time.

From classic options like its specialty lattes and signature bagel sandwiches that were inspired by Bagel Street Deli in Athens, Ohio, Sweet Nate’s Coffee is serving up many of the same favorites from the truck in its new brick-and-mortar location.

The space

The storefront has been decorated to have a “warm and welcoming” feel, Mr. Matthews said, with a corner in the front of the cafe dedicated to nearly 200 vinyls and a functioning record player to tie into both of the owners’ love for music. Guests can also request records to play at the register.
