Wind and rain are rolling through western Nevada as a winter storm hits the Sierra Nevada on Thursday.
The Truckee Meadows could see gusts up to 45 mph through midday , the National Weather Service in Reno said. Tahoe will also see winds reach 45 mph on Friday.
A winter weather advisory for Tahoe is in effect through noon Friday, with lake communities expected to see up to 2 inches of snow.
Elevations above 6,000 feet could see 2 to 8 inches of snow through Friday, with peaks getting up to 20 inches.
Travel could be difficult in western Nevada and the Sierra due to strong winds and hazardous conditions. Power outages and downed trees are possible, according to NWS.
Reno-Sparks forecast
- Thursday : A chance of rain showers throughout the day with a high of 52. Winds will be 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph until noon. Winds will decrease to 15 mph tonight, with an overnight low of 37.
- Friday : Winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Showers are possible in the morning, with a high near 55. Winds will decrease to 20 mph at night, with an overnight low of 39.
- Saturday: A chance of morning rain showers, with a high near 57. The overnight low will be 39.
- Sunday: Rain showers return, with a high of 52. It will be partly cloudy at night with a low of 26.
