Adorable Pygmy Hippo Born at Virginia Zoo
The Metro Richmond Zoo in Virginia welcomed a baby pygmy hippo on December 9th. The female calf, whose name has not yet been announced, is the third child born to Iris and Corwin.
A Christmas Miracle
The zoo reported that Iris was overjoyed on Christmas morning. In a heartwarming gesture, the zoo stated, “We feel lucky to have received two hippopotamuses for Christmas over the years.” Iris and Corwin’s previous calf was born just two days after Christmas in 2022.
A Healthy New Arrival
The newborn hippo was born in an indoor pool after a seven-month pregnancy. She weighed a healthy 15 pounds at five days old and could eventually grow up to 600 pounds.
Bonding Time
Iris and her calf are currently isolated in an enclosure for privacy. The zoo described Iris as an experienced mother who is fiercely protective of her young. The calf is nursing and thriving.
Conservation Effort
The birth of this pygmy hippo contributes to the preservation of the endangered species. Fewer than 2,500 mature individuals remain in the wild, primarily due to poaching and habitat loss.
A Social Media Star in the Making?
Following the viral success of Moo Deng, a baby hippo in Thailand, the Metro Richmond Zoo hopes that their newest addition will also capture the hearts of social media users.
