Air Force veteran’s mother finds solace in final text message before tragedy

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — November 2024 marked two years since the killing of Air Force veteran and father of two, Tiquan Smith. 10 On Your Side reconnected with his family about his unsolved murder and finding solace in the last text message he sent his mother.

On Nov. 20, 2022, Smith was on the phone with his girlfriend, Diana Skyes, when he was harassed by a pickup truck driver on the interstate.

As Smith exited to South Military Highway near I-64 East, the pickup truck driver followed him, and shots were fired.

“He [Smith] then said I’m getting off, I’m getting off. Then, he said they [the suspect] are going straight and then as soon as he said they are going straight, he said ‘Oh [expletive]! Babe, they are turning, they are turning.’ I said, ‘they’re following you.’ That’s when I heard crackle, crackle, crackle, and nothing else,” Sykes said in a previous interview with 10 On Your Side.

The Barnes family shared Sykes has since moved to the northeast due to the trauma associated with Smith’s death.
