Local families impacted by gun violence navigate grief during holidays

PORTSMOUTH, VA (WAVY) —- This holiday season, two families are grieving losses due to gun violence.

In April of 2023, Adrian Archer, 25, was shot and killed in Virginia Beach.

“He was just completely snatched. I watched my son walk out my front door at 8:52 that evening to never return,” said Nadira Casey, mother of Adrian.

In June of 2018, Malcolm Hoskins, 25, was also shot and killed in Portsmouth.

“It has been hard. I suffer with depression. I have PTSD now because I was there when the incident happened,” said Miriam Artis, mother of Malcolm.

Malcolm’s mother spoke with 10 On Your Side and revealed this is the second child she’s lost to gun violence. It’s a tragedy she wishes on no one.

“I got two empty seats at my table and matter fact, I haven’t cooked a holiday meal since my boys been gone,” Artis said.

The murders of both mother’s sons remain unsolved. Detectives with the Virginia Beach Police Department screened Adrian’s case alongside the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, but it did not provide cause to criminally charge anyone in the shooting.
