Cleveland zoo saddened by death of long-lived lioness

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Saturday announced the death of one of its African lionesses, Serena.

Serena was 19, and had lived “well beyond” the average life expectancy for a lion, according to the zoo’s Facebook post , which called her “a tremendous ambassador for her species.”

“She will be missed by all of us at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo,” the post reads.

Serena came to the zoo in 2012, with another lioness, Nala, who was euthanized in 2022 due to health issues related to her age. She, too, lived to 19 years old.
