BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A 16-year-old female giraffe at the Birmingham Zoo died early Friday morning.
According to the zoo, Willow died Friday after spending her entire life in Birmingham. She was born at the zoo on July 28, 2008.
The zoo stated Willow was not doing well for several days, and her appetite was declining. An exam was performed on her Thursday night, and zoo personnel gave her additional fluids and antibiotics. Yet, the cause of Willow’s decline was not determined.
Willow did not get back up after the exam and died. The zoo performed a necropsy on Willow and sent tissues for evaluation.

There are four reticulated giraffes at the zoo: 18-year-old male Jalil, 14-year-old female Zuri, 5-year-old female Ruby and 8-month-old female Mopane.
