Denver weather: Colorado braces for high winds and red flag warning ahead of New Year’s Eve

DENVER — Happy Sunday! We’re in between storm systems today so most of the state will be relatively quiet. The mountains will catch a brief break from the widespread snow before it returns tonight.

It will be a mild Sunday for this time of year with afternoon highs running 10-15 degrees above normal. Denver and the eastern plains will top off in the 50s with some places even hitting the lower 60s. We’ll see 30s and 40s in the mountains with upper 40s to low 50s along the western slope

Monday will be a very busy weather day in Colorado with a strong jet stream overhead. It will produce a lot of wind across the region, especially in Denver, along the foothills and on the northeastern plains. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for the area, but it will likely get upgraded to a warning later today. The current forecast calls for sustained northwest winds of 30-45 mph with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph or higher.

The wind will likely cause flight delays at Denver International Airport and travel on land will also be impacted by areas of blowing dust, especially east of I-25. The National Weather Service says a Blowing Dust Advisory or even a Dust Storm Warning will be possible on the plains before the event ends.
