‘We need it’: Boise launches new electric vehicle carshare program

BOISE — Two 2023 Chevy Bolt Electric Utility Vehicles (EUVs) are now available for rent 24/7 through Boise’s new carshare program.

One will be located at Boise’s new affordable housing complex The Franklin, located at 227 S. Orchard St., and the other near the Ronald McDonald House, on the corner of Warm Springs Avenue and Broadway Avenue.

While the car at the Ronald McDonald house has been in operation for the past few months, The Franklin’s car launch in early December marks the official start of the carshare program, designed to provide individuals with access to a vehicle without having to pay the high costs of ownership, including repairs and insurance.

“We’re not only providing access to cars for folks that need it … but it’s also helping us meet our long-term clean electricity and carbon neutrality goals in terms of getting more electric cars on the road,” Boise Mayor Lauren McLean said.

Erin Lusch, program manager for Forth Mobility, said the target was individuals who may not have access to a car. In the case of individuals or families staying in the Ronald McDonald House — many of whom travel from across the region for medical help at the nearby St. Luke’s Hospital in RVs or other larger vehicles — they may want a smaller vehicle to get around town with, Ethan Sims, St. Luke’s emergency medicine physician and medical director of sustainability, said.
