CHULA VISTA, Calif. ( FOX 5/KUSI ) — The Chula Vista Police Department will be cracking down on people driving under the influence on Friday.
According to a news release from the department Tuesday, CVPD will conduct the DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. to midnight at an undisclosed location in the city limits.

Authorities say DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes have happened. Their main purpose is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.
In addition to alcohol, CVPD wants to remind people that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may also contribute to impaired driving. It is also illegal to drive while under the influence of marijuana.
Anyone charged with a first-time DUI will face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, the department warns.
The DUI checkpoint program was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
