SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Reclaiming your pets should be a simple process, but the Humane Society says scammers are making it even more difficult — warning pet owners about what they need to watch out for.
“We know that losing a pet is incredibly stressful and we are so thrilled to see people be able to reunite with their pets,” said San Diego Humane Society Marketing Manager, Jordan Frey.
How to keep your New Year’s resolutions in 2025
The San Diego Humane Society accepted 40 displaced animals Tuesday evening as New Year’s Eve celebrations were getting underway.
“Many pets have gone missing over New Year’s Eve with the increase in fireworks and lots of things that can scare pets,” said Frey.
She says they’re expecting to see even more pets come in throughout the next couple days.
“We’re used to seeing a couple hundred pets come in after New Year’s Eve,” continued Frey.

But scammers already know that. The San Diego Humane Society says they are receiving reports of fake calls impersonating them and asking for money to reclaim pets.
