A teenage boy was shot and wounded outside a Brooklyn public school Thursday morning — the first day students returned to classes after the holiday break, according to police.
The 17-year-old was on the corner of Park and North Portland Avenues next to Dr. Susan S. McKinney Secondary School of the Arts around 8:30 a.m. when he was shot by a man in his late teens or early 20s who fled on North Oxford Street, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
Police said the teen was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in stable condition, and officers were still looking for the shooter.
The shooting came just hours after 10 young people were shot outside a party in Queens that was being held in memory for another teenage boy who was shot to death in October outside a separate public school just two blocks away from Thursday morning’s shooting.
“While this incident took place off campus, this display of gun violence is deeply concerning,” New York City Public Schools spokesperson Jenna Lyle said in a statement. “We are grateful to our dedicated school staff and NYPD school safety agents who provided critical support to this young person after they sought help at the school.”
