Authorities investigating cause of fire that heavily damaged east Erie apartment house

Authorities are investigating the cause of a Friday morning fire that heavily damaged a two-unit apartment house on Erie’s east side.

The fire at 1302 Wayne St. was reported at about 7 a.m. Friday. There were no injuries in the fire, but a dog died, said Don Sauer, chief fire marshal for the Erie Bureau of Fire.

Sauer said the fire appears to have started on the north side of the first floor of the house and caused heavy damage to the first and second floors.

The second-floor apartment had no utilities, and gas and electric service were turned off to the first-floor apartment on Thursday, Sauer said. He said it’s questionable about the house’s tenants, as the person reportedly leasing the first-floor apartment is in a nursing home and investigators were told people were going in and out of the building all the time.

Firefighters remained at the scene until shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.
