LUBBOCK, TX – When Valerie and Rodrigo Celis heard the words “it’s positive,” they couldn’t believe it. They’d struggled with infertility and Valerie battled Polycystic Ovary Syndrom (PCOS) for years. The couple stopped trying to have a baby in 2010 after undergoing multiple fertility treatments and a miscarriage.
“We looked at each other like how could this be?” Valerie said.

That wasn’t the end of the story, though. 40-year-old Valerie learned she was already seven months pregnant. She had no idea the whole time. She originally went to see the doctor due to high blood pressure, some swelling, and abdominal distention, but she thought that was due to other health issues. She didn’t believe there was any way she could be pregnant – she’d given up that dream a long time ago.
“It’s really hard because it’s like, you really want to have a baby and with our age and stuff like that, I just thought, maybe, it would have happened a lot sooner and just waiting and waiting … when time just kept going and it didn’t it just kind of makes you feel a little bit sad,” Valerie said.
