I suppose most Ohioans head south in the winter, if a vacation opportunity arises. Not me, necessarily. I like northern climes and the hardy beasts that ride out winter at frosty latitudes. With that in mind, Shauna and I headed north in mid-December of the year just past.
Our destination was Canada’s most populous metropolitan area, Toront o. The big city and its neighboring communities hug the western end of Lake Ontario and are only a six-hour drive from Columbus.
We weren’t there to see the CN Tower or Toronto’s other numerous attractions. Ducks were our target.
What is the smallest Great Lake? That’s kind of a trick question. By surface area, it’s Lake Ontario, which is “only” 193 miles long and 53 miles across at the widest point.
Lake Erie, which forms much of Ohio’s north coast, is slightly larger. But Erie averages only 62 feet deep, while the average depth of Ontario is 283 feet. The water volume of three Lake Eries could fit into Ontario.
