Motorcycle vs pickup in Puyallup: one man sent to hospital, the other arrested

Puyallup police responded Sunday evening to a collision in the city that sent a motorcyclist to a hospital with serious injuries and closed a road near South Hill Mall for hours.

According to a department news release, the crash occurred at 6:02 p.m. as a motorcyclist headed eastbound on 39th Avenue Southwest and approached the 700 block. At that point, a pickup truck entered the roadway from 7th Street Southwest, “without yielding the right of way to the motorcycle, causing a collision,” the release sad.

The collision knocked the motorcycle and rider across the road. The rider, a 28 year old Pierce County man, was transported to a local hospital, police said.

A collision investigation team responded to the scene while police assessed the pickup truck driver, a 72-year-old Pierce County man. Following an impairment evaluation, the man was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The police department statement said 39th Avenue Southwest would be closed in both directions between 9th Street Southwest and 5th Street Southwest while the investigation continued.
