6-year-old rushed to Lakeland hospital after self-inflicted gunshot to head: police

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A 6-year-old child was rushed to a hospital in Lakeland on Sunday after police said he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

At 3:44 p.m., Lakeland police responded to a home in the 200 block of Crawford Street after receiving a report of a young boy who was shot in the head in a vehicle.

Before officers could arrive on scene, the child had been driven to Lakeland Regional Health.

Detectives said in their preliminary investigation, that the incident appeared to have been an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot. The 6-year-old got ahold of the firearm, which was inside the car, according to the police department.

As of this report, the child is in critical condition.

Police said no charges have been determined. This remains an active investigation.
