Richmond started the week with its first decent snowfall since Jan. 2022 (when Sen. Tim Kaine, and hundreds of others, were trapped on I-95 overnight).
Why it matters: We could get another round of snow this weekend.
The big picture: A winter storm dropped around 2-4 inches of snow on RVA Sunday into Monday morning before switching to freezing rain and then rain and closing area public schools through Tuesday.
- While the rain washed away most of the snow from roads by Monday afternoon, the official total recorded at the airport Sunday night was 4 inches, WTVR reported , making it Richmond’s biggest snowfall in seven years.
- A second round of snow Monday evening was set to give the region another 1-3 inches as of press time.
Zoom in: The snow and ice brought downed trees and power lines and made for treacherous road conditions.
- At its peak, more than 30,000 households in the Richmond region were without power.
- Virginia State Police responded to nearly 200 crashes statewide on Sunday alone and 96 in Richmond on Monday morning, WRIC reported .
- Over at the airport, 32 flights were canceled and nine were delayed by more than an hour, per RIC .
