HINESVILLE, Ga. (WSAV) — The Liberty County Board of Education (LCBOE) said that they intend to opt out of the statewide homestead exemption for Liberty County School District on Monday.
The LCBOE said that they will hold three public hearings, which are required in order to opt out of the exemption. Anyone who wishes to speak on the exemption can attend the meetings at the Board of Education, located on 200 Bradwell Street in Hinesville.
The first meeting will be held on Jan. 14 at 5:00 p.m., then the second Jan. 28 at 8:30 a.m. and a third meeting on Feb. 11 at 6:00 p.m.
The homestead exemption was passed by the Georgia General Assembly during the 2024 legislative session and voted on in Nov. 2024.
The exemption is expected to be used to slow property tax hikes that occur when home values rise. Property taxes are based on the assessed value of a home and the property tax rate.
Home property assessments will be capped at the inflation rate for the previous year. By doing this, it could hold down assessment increases so property taxes would be limited as well.
