Maryland’s First Black-Owned Movie Theater Says Goodbye After 7 Years

Maryland ‘s first Black-owned movie theater, Next Act Cinema , has closed its doors after seven years of serving the community.

According to WMAR2 News , the Pikesville theater closed this past Saturday. Next Act Cinema had taken over the Pikes Theatre building, providing a space for locals to enjoy the latest films since its opening.

The owners expressed gratitude to their patrons in a heartfelt Facebook statement, saying, “We had the privilege of bringing the magic of movies to Pikesville and creating a space where stories came to life, memories were made, and connections were built.”

The statement continued, “Your unwavering support, from attending screenings to sharing laughs and celebrating milestones with us, has meant the world. Next Act Cinema was more than just a theater; it was a community, and that was only possible because of you.”

Supporters Share Their Shock and Sadness

Patrons flooded the Facebook comments section with their reactions. One user shared their gratitude for the theater, writing, “You were my go-to for movies. I only went to your spot if I went to the movies. So many great memories and [proud] Black moments.”
