Johnston lands grant for river access in Clayton

CLAYTON — Canoe and kayak enthusiasts are a step closer to being able to put in on the Neuse River.

Johnston County has received a $145,500 state grant for what it’s calling the East Clayton river access site.

“It will allow us to put in a canoe and kayak launch along with a fishing dock and permeable parking area,” Adrian O’Neal, the county’s parks, recreation and open space director, said in an email.

Johnston is working with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission to build the access. “Their engineering team has already started the preliminary engineering work on the project,” O’Neal said.

The state grant will pay half of the project’s $291,000 cost. “The remaining funds will come from the county’s Open Space Fund, but we are always open to donations to make these facilities possible,” O’Neal said.

The county hopes to have the site open within 18 months, he said.
