Blue Ridge Beef is recalling more than a thousand pounds of kitten food.
A pet food company is recalling more than a thousand pounds of kitten food after a sample of one of their products in Massachusetts tested positive for salmonella.
Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 1,350 pounds of their 2-pound log of kitten mix, according to the statement shared by the Food and Drug Administration. A sample of the product was collected in response to a customer’s complaint of animal illness on Dec. 12 by officials in Massachusetts and tested in the state’s public health laboratory. The sample tested positive for salmonella, which puts both the animals eating the product — and the humans who handle the product — at risk of illness.
Blue Ridge Beef was notified of the positive test on Jan. 3, and the company is now recalling lot N25-0716 UPC 8542980013436, which was distributed in Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut between July 18, 2024 and July 26, 2024.
“Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting,” the company said in a statement, shared by the FDA. “Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
