Pensacola red light cameras are on and mayor says number of violators is ‘staggering’

Pensacola’s new red light cameras were switched on New Year’s Day , and Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said the number of people running red lights was “staggering.”

“There’s a lot of people running red lights,” Reeves said.

The city will release the first number count of red light violations next week, Reeves said, as they are working to gather more than a five-day sample size.

“We want to have all the information to you before we say how many hundreds of people run red lights in five days,” Reeves said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Pensacola began installing red light cameras last year to cover five of the city’s most dangerous intersections. The cameras were activated on Jan. 1 to begin a 30-day grace period, and on Feb. 1, violators will receive actual tickets.

When fully installed, they will cover 13 approaches at the five intersections. So far, however, only nine approaches have coverage.

Two intersections, Ninth Avenue and Bayou Boulevard and Ninth Avenue and Airport Boulevard, will be fully covered in all directions by the cameras.
