PENSACOLA, Fla. ( WKRG ) — Waterfront Rescue Mission in Pensacola has implemented a cold weather plan including check-in times extending through all hours of the night, an unlimited overnight capacity and no cost to anyone seeking shelter to name a few.

“It’s just good to make sure we can get the people who are living on the street, give them an opportunity as what we call a ‘hand-up’ instead of a ‘hand-out,” Pensacola Waterfront Rescue Mission Director Frederick Henderson said.

Henderson said the shelter allows new rules because unhoused folks won’t be able to withstand these cold temperatures for too long.
“You have individuals that’s in our homeless population that will stay outside for one or two days, but after one or two days, they start migrating to this area,” he said.
