Opinion – Houston’s District J to J City: A Branding Mismatch

From District J to J City – The District and city are different entities. A brand name should evoke a sense of identity and resonate with the target audience, not create confusion or misrepresentation. In this case, branding a district as a city may lead to false consumer expectations and disappointment.

Houston Council Member Edward Pollard, representing District J, kicked off 2025 with an exciting announcement – the rebranding of his District to J City. District J, located on the southwest side of Houston, is home to a large Hispanic and Latino population and encompasses vibrant neighborhoods such as Gulfton, Sharpstown, and Westwood.

Pollard took to his LinkedIn account to share his vision for the newly named J City, emphasizing that the District will operate as its municipality. He highlighted that services and programs will be specifically tailored to meet the needs of J City residents.

One of the key components of Pollard’s rebranding initiative is implementing a range of services designed to provide a faster and more personalized response to constituent concerns. For instance, Pollard proposed the introduction of modern community policing in collaboration with the Houston Police Department (HPD). This initiative aims to enhance policing efforts, particularly in addressing neighborhood-related crimes and ensuring quicker and more efficient responses.
