Monday night marked the first rescue of 2025 for the ANNA Shelter with a call coming in of a reportedly deceased dog found in a driveway.
The director and founder of the shelter Ruth Thompson said the dog was brought in after the caller asked for advice on what to do with the dog.
“I was handed, in a blanket, she doesn’t weigh much. Picked her up started, walking to the back, asked Riley to get a microchip scanner so we can scan her. I was ready to body bag her and put her in the freezer,” said Thompson.
But there was a faint sound of life — A soft moan from the dog, whose name is Phoenix.

At that moment, Thompson said her staff sprung into action.
“Under the guidance of Dr. Ziegler it was SubQ fluids, the glucose, she was given Warmies. We have, like, saline bags that we warm up in the microwave to get these guys’ temperatures back up,” said Thompson.
Hot blankets from the dryer were also used to warm the pup along with a staff member laying his body across the dog for additional heat.
