Convicted felon arrested with narcotics on jail property in Rancho Cucamonga

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, California — A 44-year-old convicted felon from Rialto was arrested after driving onto jail property with narcotics, according to the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department. The incident occurred on January 5, 2025, at the West Valley Detention Center.Deputy Martinez-Nava stopped Steve Canche as he drove past the guard station. A record check revealed Canche’s status as a convicted felon, which prohibited him from being on the property under Penal Code 4571. A search of his vehicle uncovered a glass pipe and approximately 2 grams of suspected methamphetamine. Canche’s prior convictions for narcotics possession led to charges under H&S 11395 for possession with two or more prior convictions, PC 4573.5 for bringing narcotics onto jail property, and PC 4571 for being a convicted felon on jail property, stated the source.This arrest is one of the first applications of Proposition 36, which was passed by California voters on November 5, 2024, and took effect on December 18, 2024.
