ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Stateline restaurants and bakeries are worried about how the Avian Flu, a virus that affects wild birds, has raised the price of eggs.
The price of eggs has gone from $4 to $8 in certain areas.
Halo Bakery’s Owner is worried she will not be able to give accurate pricing on cakes and other bakery items.
“A lot of it is pricing and then trying to price things in the long run because we do a lot of wedding cakes and we get a lot of inquiries as far as pricing for cakes for later in the year and even for next year or even the year after,” said Halo Bakery Owner Liz Malone. “It’s really hard to give quotes for cakes in the future if we don’t know what’s going to happen.”
While the Avian Flu will most likely not physically affect consumers, it may monetarily affect them. Mary’s Market’s Marketing Director worries the restaurant will have to raise prices in the future.
“Hopefully, it’s on a short-term increase,” said Mary’s Market’s Marketing Director Miralem Botic. “Hopefully, we see the prices come back down. We don’t want to pass that off to our customers. But like I said, for now, we’re absorbing it and hopefully it just gets better.”
