Hall-Long becomes Delaware’s 75th governor

DOVER — Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long became the state’s 75th governor Tuesday, sworn in at a packed Old State House to complete the final two weeks of outgoing Gov. John Carney’s term.

With her oath of office, Gov. Hall-Long became the state’s second female leader. She is also the first nurse to serve in the role in the United States.

Gov. Carney resigned Tuesday to become the mayor of Wilmington. He is scheduled to be sworn in Tuesday night.

Gov.-elect Matt Meyer and Lt. Gov.-elect Kyle Evans Gay will take their respective oaths of office Jan. 21.

“(This is about) bridging the past to the future, from Gov. Carney’s administration to Gov.-elect Meyer and Lt. Gov.-(elect Kyle) Evans Gay’s administration and how we make that strong bridge,” Gov. Hall-Long said at Tuesday’s ceremony.

“We want a strong, healthy Delaware. We want the best place for our kids to live, work, grow up and prosper, and that’s what we’ve done.”

Much of Gov. Hall-Long’s remarks focused on serving as a connection between the two administrations.
