Scammers attempt to steal nearly $5K from couple at Near North Side Target

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago couple has a crazy story to tell after being victims of a scam. It’s a lesson for iPhone users.

Drew and Leilani were at a Target store on the Near North Side, at Division and Larabee.

They told CBS News Chicago they were approached by two men who said they were raising money to bury their young brother. The couple agreed to give them $20.

“They wouldn’t take cash,” Leilani said.

“I already had my phone out, so I just went to use my Apple card, so it tapped to pay… looked down  at my phone and realized that they took close to $5,000 instead of $20…I kind of said to myself, ‘Oh hell no,’ and turned and started chasing them,” Drew said.

It spilled into the parking garage, and there was a struggle. One of the scammers tried to drive away, and Drew got into the moving car.

“As they took off, they accelerated pretty quickly. They were swerving into the left lane of parked cars,” added Drew.

He was thrown from the car and skidded along the pavement until his body hit the back of a truck.
