A dispute over bus fares turned deadly in Atlanta on Friday after three men allegedly shot and killed a bus driver, who asked them to pay up before they could ride.
MARTA Chief of Police Scott Kreher confirmed that his team and Atlanta police are looking for a third suspect after arresting two in connection to the shooting death, which took place near the Decatur bus station in the 400 block of Church Street.
Officers responded to a 911 call detailing an altercation between the driver, Leroy Ramos, 47, and three suspects, who have not yet been named by the police.
“That physical altercation turned into gunfire as one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and shot our bus operator three times and then fled the scene,” Kreher said. “All three fled the scene.”
Ramos was taken to the hospital but ultimately died from his injuries, with his union, the Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents transit and allied workers in both the U.S. and Canada, condemning the violence as it identified him as the victim.
