Mexican Artists Receive State Protection After Cartel Threats

Mexican authorities are providing protection to popular singer Natanael Cano and other artists after a drug cartel publicly threatened their lives. Photos of a threatening banner circulated on social media, signed by a faction of the Sinaloa cartel.

The cartel accused the artists of supporting a rival gang. They warned that the artists would be killed if they did not stop their alleged financial assistance.

In response, the Sonoran Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation and offered state protection to the artists to prevent any aggression related to the threat. The nature of the protection was not disclosed.

Corridos, a musical genre linked to drug violence, has seen a resurgence in popularity, with artists like Cano blending traditional styles with other genres. However, these artists often face criticism and threats from authorities and gangs.

In recent years, several concerts by artists associated with narcocorridos have been canceled due to threats. In an effort to combat the glorification of drug traffickers, Mexican authorities have taken steps to promote alternative musical styles.

The threat against Cano comes amid a surge in violence in northern Mexico following the capture of a cartel boss and the ensuing power struggle within the Sinaloa Cartel.
