Attorney General to Release Report on Trump’s Election Interference

Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to release a portion of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s final report that focuses on federal election interference charges against Donald Trump.

Court Blocking Report’s Release

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon temporarily blocked the report’s release to prevent potential harm. However, prosecutors argued that Garland has the authority to release the report.

Prosecutors’ Argument

The Justice Department argued that Garland has the authority to supervise subordinates and release investigative reports. They also stated that Trump’s former co-defendants’ concerns about Smith’s appointment are irrelevant since he has already submitted the report.

Volume Two Release on Hold

Garland will not publicly release the portion of the report related to classified documents at this time. However, it will be made available to select congressional leaders.

Trump’s Not Guilty Pleas

Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal charges related to mishandling classified materials. He also pleaded not guilty to attempting to delete surveillance footage at Mar-a-Lago.

Smith’s Current Status

Special Counsel Smith has been winding down cases against Trump since his reelection, as per DOJ policy prohibiting the prosecution of sitting presidents.
