A car dealership GPS tracker and a police K-9 unit helped law enforcement apprehend a 37-year-old Portland man who stole a Ford Mustang.
According to a social media statement from the West Linn Police Department, Jayairus Johnson stole the Mustang from Diplomat Motors in Portland around 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6.
“WL officers located the vehicle, a blue Ford Mustang, driving southbound on HWY 43 and it eluded their attempts to stop it,” the statement read. “Officers learned the employees (from the dealership) were using a GPS tracker, which allowed officers to locate the unoccupied Mustang on Village Park Pl.”
Multiple law enforcement partners, including the Lake Oswego Police Department K-9 unit, responded to search the area but were unsuccessful. An officer later identified a man matching the suspect’s description walking on Summerlinn Drive. Police arrested Johnson and found a Mustang key fob in his pocket.
Johnson was charged in Clackamas County court with unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person. Johnson also had a warrant from Kitsap County, Washington for robbery.
