Muni cutting service on multiple bus lines, as it confronts financial crisis

Muni will cut service on four San Francisco bus lines in February as the agency confronts a looming financial crisis, officials said Wednesday.

Citing a need to stretch a “limited budget” for existing riders, representatives of San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will reduce the frequency of midday bus trips on three popular lines — the 24 Divisadero, 38 Geary and 43 Masonic. Beginning Feb. 1, fewer buses would run along these routes between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays, when they are normally less crowded.

Additionally, the agency will slash two morning trips on the 1X California Express route, which depart from 33rd Ave. and Geary Blvd. at 7:15 and 7:45 a.m.

Cost-saving interventions will also affect the subway system. SFMTA will run one-car trains on the K Ingleside and M Oceanview routes on weekends, aiming to save money on maintenance and cleaning.

Commuters will see changes on other lines, such as the relocation of several stops on the 29 Sunset, a move mostly unrelated to budgetary concerns. Some of the new stops have protective shelters and more space for people to wait.
