Carson City Big Lots to close at end of January as company shuts more stores

The Carson City and Sparks Big Lots locations remain open as of Jan. 8. but are preparing to close as the company shuts down nationwide.

Staff at the Sparks Big Lots location told the RGJ that they did not know when the store will finalize closing. The store will remain open until it sells out of goods during Big Lots’ going-out-of-business sales.

The Carson City store will close on Jan. 26, staff said.

The two Big Lots in Reno (one in Lemmon Valley and one on South McCarran Boulevard) have already closed following similar liquidation sales last fall.

Why is Big Lots closing?

After months of store closures and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Big Lots is preparing to close all of its locations, including the two remaining in Northern Nevada, according to a press release issued Thursday.

In 2024, Reno’s two stores were among more than 400 to close as part of the company’s nationwide liquidation efforts.

In September, Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection weeks after announcing plans to close 340 stores across the U.S.
