Jimmy Carter state funeral: Schedule for Thursday’s memorial services in Washington, D.C. and Plains

The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will conclude on Thursday with services in Washington, D.C. and his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Since Saturday, tens of thousands have gathered to pay their respects to Carter at both the Carter Center in Atlanta and the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., where Carter will lie in state until 7 a.m. Thursday.

The ceremonies celebrating Carter in D.C. will include a departure ceremony at the Capitol, the National Funeral Service at Washington National Cathedral and a final departure from Joint Base Andrews.

Carter’s remains will return to Georgia where an arrival ceremony will be held at Lawson Army Airfield at Fort Moore. The state funeral concludes in Plains with a private service at Maranatha Baptist Church and a procession through downtown Plains.

The family will hold a private interment at the Carters’ family home, where the former president will be buried next to his late wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.
