Arrest warrant in Brooklyn Park becomes hazmat situation after finding castor beans, used to extract highly toxic ricin

A 54-year-old Brooklyn Park man is being held on probable cause attempted murder after an arrest Thursday morning involving local police, the FBI and the Minnesota National Guard’s 55th Civil Support Team.

The warrant was related to an ongoing domestic violence investigation.

After that search warrant was served around 5:30 in the morning, it turned into a hazmat situation on the 6400 block of Zealand Avenue North.

Investigators say the suspect was believed to be in possession of castor beans which are known to be highly toxic . Castor beans are a source for the extracting and concentrating of ricin, which is then potentially used in making a potent biological weapon.

Several individuals were located inside the residence and were safely detained without incident.

Police say there’s no danger to the public as investigators and hazmat personnel remain on scene.
