ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – A family had to evacuate their home early Thursday morning after a fire started in their dining room.
Rockford Fire Department investigators said a woman living at 1320 Elm St. woke up to the smell of smoke around 4 a.m. She then woke up her husband after hearing popping noises. They discovered a small fire in the dining room area and evacuated to the front porch after calling 911.
Firefighters searched the home to confirm everyone was out safely and successfully contained the fire to prevent further damage. Their initial ruling is that the fire started accidentally. The exact cause is still under investigation.
The Red Cross helped the family with temporary relocation so repairs can be made. The damage to the home is estimated around $9,000.
