Elon Musk has backtracked on his previous claim that his “Department of Government Efficiency” would save the government $2 trillion. He now says that a more realistic goal is to save $1 trillion.
Musk had previously argued that DOGE would save at least $2 trillion, but some experts questioned the feasibility of such significant cuts. Musk now acknowledges that the commission will need to “have some overage” and that a $1 trillion saving would be a “good shot.”
Despite his revised estimate, Musk still believes the government is “a very target-rich environment for saving money.” He added that “you could close your eyes, and you can’t miss.”
Republican lawmakers have expressed support for DOGE’s efforts, with Sen. Joni Ernst and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene set to lead the work in their respective chambers.
Musk’s influence has grown since Trump’s victory, and he has played a role in shaping policy decisions. However, his political activities in Europe, including his endorsement of far-right parties, have raised concerns.
Trump has dismissed these concerns, saying that Musk is “doing a good job.” Musk and Trump’s transition team have not yet responded to requests for comment.
