Knoxville receives $500,000 in federal funds for Lonsdale Park project

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville received $500,000 in federal funds for the city’s Lonsdale Park project. The city council approved documents to accept the grant during its Tuesday meeting.

The money comes from the United States Department of Housing and Urbane Development and does not require a match from the city. Knoxville leaders already allocated $4 million for the first phase of the project. The federal money is meant to give additional funding to help the city offset the costs of planning and design elements.

The project envisions a park with play and fitness areas constructed at the former site of the Sam E. Hill School. The plan also calls for a sports center and a green space. Construction is expected to start later this year and a part of the former school is expected to be preserved and converted into the Sam E. Hill Community Center during the next phase of the project…
