Where you live in the Tri-State matters when it comes to ‘snow days’ and handling them

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (WKRC) – Students across the Tri-State missed several days of school due to snow and cold weather, but how districts handle these inclement weather days varies by the state.

In Ohio, schools operate on an hours-based system rather than a days-based system. Middle and high school students must receive a minimum of 1,001 hours of instruction. Districts can schedule additional hours to accommodate snow days or other cancelations. They also have the option to conduct online learning for up to three days of canceled in-person classes, as was the case this week.

Meanwhile, in Indiana, schools must be in session for a minimum of 180 student days, said Lawrenceburg Community Schools Corporation Superintendent Karl Galey.

“Indiana doesn’t receive any calamity days on any days we miss. We do have to make up in some form or some fashion,” Galey said…
